Bats!

The christening went well despite the gloomy weather. At the end of the service we were joined by a bat. It swooped gaily up and down the church in acrobatic swerves.  Most people thought it was a swallow but then a child said the magic words "It's a bat" A  tremor passed along the rows so I said brightly  "Don't be frightened  it's only a bat, it can't hurt you"  None of them were  alarmed, just fascinated by the free show of aerobatics!  One of the mothers then told us a strange story.  She lives in a very old barn where of course there are bats. One night after a giant storm a bat tumbled down and went straight down the front of her jumper and nestled into her comforting bosum. "What on earth did you do?" was the question most people asked. She said she just stroked it gently and then very carefully fished it out.  It flew off.  I  never knew that bats were not just in the belfry.
