The lure of a bacon butty.

One of my friends made through the wonderful world of blogging suggested a solution to the problem of having a vegetarian wife married to a carnivorous man.....have two menus, one with meat one without....My reply was that these days  life is much too short to cook two separate meals in a day.....but I have done it in my younger days.
During the sixties I embraced all things hippie.....I wore my flower power skirts, did transcendental meditation and went vegetarian...
The veggie phase lasted around ten years.....I did start by making "proper" food for the rest of the family but I stayed meatless and gradually they all joined me...
My main reason was health.....I had had a stroke following the birth of my daughter.....it was a very minor one but it meant I was health conscious in a way that I'd never been before and I was definitely healthier as a vegetarian...The children got used to nut roasts, lentil bakes and eggs with everything. I lost weight and my blood pressure went back to normal...
I had read that the amount of cereal it takes to fatten a young bullock would feed a family more economically too.....Vegetarianism was a very attractive proposition....
I know this has happened to lots of ex veggies but it was the bacon butties that  sabotaged me.   I only had to smell the heavenly aroma of crisp bacon for me to wish devoutly that I'd never heard of vegetarianism . I gave in.
I've been a meat eater ever since.....friends who knew me back then still insist on giving me soya sausage rolls etc...not knowing that I'd given it all up ... but I loathed the meat substitutes...
In those days vegetarian meals were not available at Marks and Spencer.....you had to grind your own nuts, and there was a lot of preparation in a good nut roast!
I still prefer not to eat huge chunks of meat.....but I can    not go back to cooking two meals everyday ever again.....Life is even shorter these days!

I'm veggie. My spouse is a carnivore. But, we compromise. At home it's all veggie. When we go out, she gets to indulge in meat etc.

It works well for us and after many years we are content with it. Our friends know so accept that if they wan't to eat meat, we go out to eat.
