Porn?

In the seventies I lived with my two children in a pretty bungalow in a close. The houses went round in a semi circle and we all knew each other by our first names.

The family next door to us moved out and a new family moved in...we introduced ourselves over the garden hedge and all was well. Two weeks later we realised we hadn't seen the man, Dave since the day they'd moved in.

Later that week on another morning of putting out our washing his wife called out to me.

"Don't worry about Dave......he's in prison......he'll be back. " I must have looked a bit surprised. Her next line was the killer "It's ok...nothing to worry about....it's only for porn...he didn't get long."

The memory of this has returned this week along with other memories of the time when I had small children to protect....but I agreed with Dave's wife....porn was nothing to worry about. There were much worse things to be sent to prison for.

Since all the Jimmy Savile revelations lots more things have emerged from the darkness for us to be shocked about. Last night we were all waiting to see who the senior politician was who was involved in the North Wales appalling abuse scene.

I am very afraid that this is going to get worse.....abusers who have got away with it for years must now be shaking in their boots.

Twenty years later in Essex the first David was invited onto a quick little holiday in France by the deputy head of a large school near by....just us and a few of the boys he was told. He didn't go and a few years later was very glad not to have gone when the man was sent to prison as a pedophile with an extensive collection on his computer.

In our sixties society of "anything goes" we were trying to get rid of hyporacy and double standards and I'm glad we did but now it seems that the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction....

We have to bring it all out into the light I am sure but lets be aware that this also involves a degree of prurience that can contaminate us all....The sooner it is all revealed and we can get back to normal bad news the better.
