Too many deaths.....

The horror of all those people who died in Mecca yesterday is astounding. Over seven hundred people were trampled to death.

It is part of their belief system that every Muslim has to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime to fulfill Hajj.....they save for it, they take great pleasure in planning this trip...so the tragedy that occurred yesterday is doubly sad.

On reading the reports I saw that people being crushed in the crowd happens most years...but not in such great numbers as this last one.

Oddly a friend had sent me pictures of the tent city which houses thousands of visitors every year...and yesterday we saw pictures of this well equipped temporary erection.

My friend wondered why this massive collection of tents could not be used for housing those refugees desperately searching for shelter...and that does make sense of course but most of them are searching for new lives...in new countries, away from the war areas they grew up in...

Most of us in the past would have had huge sympathy for those who died and for their relations waiting for them to return from the event of a life time...

Today this sympathy is tinged with something else...., horror is replaced by a sort of dull feeling of acceptance of God's will....casting blame is just beginning along with the process of dealing with the white clad bodies...

Once again in this strange world we inhabit our only recourse is prayer...for those people who died in following one of the tenets of their faith...and try to remember that God is still good.....one God......
