Losing our faculties.

During my recent visits to old friends there is a common theme...we all forget names!
It's not uncommon for us to sit and ask the other person to remind us of the name of someone in the news whilst we grope for the word we are searching for.
Some conversations are marked by difficulties with sight but more often with hearing. One old friend has a sharp intelligence and wit but unless she can see your face conversation fails frequently. She is lip reading!
Getting old brings all sorts of difficulties which are hard to deal with on a daily basis and the young, having no experience of losing various faculties make fun of the deficiencies all too apparent in any conversation.
Yesterday one of my old friends sent me a whole page of stories entitled "why do we laugh at old people? "
We laugh because much of it is funny and it's better to treat it with a sense of humour!
It also shows us that we are not alone! Some deterioration of our faculties is inevitable as our bodies age. The main thing to understand though is that as long as we can laugh at ourselves as well as others we are the lucky ones...
This is one of the stories from yesterday's email.

"An elderly man had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%
The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, 'Your hearing is perfect.. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.'
The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't told my family yet.
I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!' "
I love it!

Lovely.! There is also the 'cover' of failing sight to see 'selectively' only those things we choose to see. For example, the fact that you have 'unwittingly' sat in the only comfortable chair in the room.
Oh yes, there are definitely a few advantages as well as the obvious disadvantages to ageing.
Look hard enough and there is always something to be a Pollyanna about.
Yes I do know that is awful grammar, so kill me!

Us Pollyanas have to stick together. I wouldn't dream of killing you!
