Its got to be fair.

The fall out from the march on Saturday continues. Most papers and TV news reporters are being very fair on the whole and reporting that for most of the time it was a peaceful demonstration. It was also huge. A massive show of people who felt strongly enough to go out and be counted.
On occasions when it seems futile to do anything at all because its all going to happen anyway, it cheers my heart to think that there are so many people who do care.
Of course we need cuts. We cannot go blithely on knowing how huge our debt is and doing nothing about it but most of the people in Cornwall say almost the same thing and I've heard a lot of voices over the weekend.
"We want the cuts to be fair. So long as we are all contributing its fine. " The problem is when it's clearly not fair. The common thought from some very unlikely people is that the Tories look after their  own.
Almost everyone I've spoken to during the weekend have said that or something very similar. There is a common anxiety that the poor and  the disadvantaged are going to lose out more than anyone else.
The other common concern is the banks. Whilst its true that the last government abolished the regulations that might have prevented what's happened, its also true that reckless gambling brought at least one bank to the point of collapse and the fact that we the tax payers now own over 80% of that bank makes it incredible that they are still paying themselves huge bonuses.
British people have a keen sense of justice. If one group of people seem to be exempt from the cuts whilst others are paying more then it doesn't just feel wrong. It is wrong. And that's why so many people took to the streets at the weekend. I was proud to know many of them.
