Rough sleepers.

People all over this ship are coughing. Again.
So far I'm not because I am avoiding the obvious, loud ones. At least half of my table have succumbed. So far.
I am relying on the fact that it's only two months since I was last on this ship and I may have developed immunity!
People at home are used to me getting back sick...I promised this time to arrive back the same as I went....slightly dodgy but cough free.
My morning stroll around Lisbon revealed piles of garbage, tins, bottles etc not yet cleared up. Lisbon clearly had a good New Year's Eve.
I spent half a day once gazing out at the number of churches on hills so this morning I tried to visit one.
They were all locked.
The concept of locked churches is still foreign to me but after seeing the litter left on the streets I can see why.
David as the church warden of St Mawes used to insist that the church was not locked.
On Saturday night, men came over on the ferry and slept in the church fairly often....when I arrived to take the service they cleared up their bottles , greeted us warmly and often stayed on for the service . They joined in the hymns lustily but fell asleep during the sermon...which was fair enough...
The only man to take advantage had we found moved in. Under the altar was his sleeping bag and lots of bottles.....mostly empty.
David gathered up his stuff and then volunteered to transport him into Truro.
We didn't want permanent guests...only the odd weekenders...
Knowing that my husband was a soft touch meant that occasionally they tried to take advantage of him...but he was much too wise for that...they got short shrift afterwards.
The men sleeping in doorways yesterday were of a similar ilk...but without a kind hearted keeper .
I could see why!

Roough sleepers are common here We often have a temporary resident in the grounds of the church, who shelter under a convenient arch under an external staircase, or down a set of covered steps to the old boiler room.

We do try to help them, but after some episodes of vandalism, we had them moved on by the local police team, particularly as there was evidence that there had been drug dealing going on.

But we can't protect the church 24/7, so rely on sharp eyed neighbors and the Vicar living right next door to keep an eye out.

We are also going to install CCTV, but that needs a lot of paperwork and cash to achieve.
