In the middle of winter a small herd of cattle are my nearest neighbours. They live on the meadow in front of my house and are lovely to watch.
At present we have fifteen young bullocks.
They are very playful. Apart from chasing each other they are curious animals and investigate everything unusual in their field....so the frequent hikers sometimes get more than they bargained for.
They play fight. I don’t think any of them is in any kind of danger...they lower their heads and butt each other very strongly...the winner forcing the loser back a few paces. It never gets serious...it really is just play.
As is the mounting.
As they are all masculine animals it’s hard to see without laughing but sometimes they do try. I don’t know which is more surprised, the one being mounted or any odd passerby .
There are fewer people about just at the moment. I don’t believe these animals would hurt anyone on purpose but it Is worth noting that most hikers turn back at the sight of the resident cattle.
The downside is when the farmer arrives to get them into his truck. One by one they are collected and taken elsewhere.
I am always sad to see them go and find I am off steak for a little while.
It’s not good to eat your neighbours.
