On we go!

The sun shines again. It is warm outside and very inviting...but it’s an invitation I have to refuse. Since my brush with skin cancer about four years ago I am now very careful indeed, usually laughing it off by saying, "No one needs two operations on the face." And I don’t. One of my best friends also has skin problems and always wears hat to shield his face from the sun. So I am still pale skinned. I have bought several tinted face creams to look more like my summer self but somehow I’m reluctant to use them . Every time I go out I look at the chairs I’ve put in their usual summer place , sometimes I sit in them ...but not for long. Looking at old photographs I see the skin growth quite clearly and I’m glad it’s now gone. But it has made a significant difference to my life. By this time in the past I would have been tanned almost all over. Now I’m not. Which is fine. But it is a real change to my summer life. From my perch in the garden I hear the voices of passers by.....sometimes they hear mine...I still sing as I walk sometimes. But this summer is different. The pandemic has made us all wary of each other and wearing masks has become normal now..but I don’t need one in my garden. It’s all very different. My cleaner says that all the visitors wear them when they walk around the village. But so far none of us is aware of any real problem here. The statistics are all good...but when someone does die inevitable pondering takes place...was it the virus? No one is sure. But on we go...with or without masks...but I am aware yet again of how very fortunate we are here. Long may our luck continue.

In a way it the virus has made hermits of us, although I go out to a local shop, or a weekly shop, or to the hospital for Jen, for the rest of the time I am in my garden or indoors, as I like you, avoid the sun, particularly in the middle of the day, and I go covered up.

Many of my neighbors are well tanned, or have children in the garden having fun, when perhaps they should have been in school or studying at home. Once a few weeks ago, when the restrictions were at their height the teenagers next door invited some noisy young people in, who were not part of their household and we virtually had a garden/garage rave going on. But it was quickly suppressed when someone (not us) reported it and the Police came knocking - and evicted those who should have not been there and we hear, gave the parents once they returned (they are both key workers) a stern talking too. No fines, just as the police call it "Advice Given"
