A Cock!

Yesterday brought me a new problem. I found a large cock in my garden. He was very bright and colourful and seemed determined to stay. I went out several times to see him but today its raining and I am not yet ready to trek up the very long garden. I am not sure what I would do anyway. He is not doing any harm. But he must belong to someone. I have asked the most likely neighbour but she says he is not hers...but he is obviously a show bird..and I wouldnt like him to end up as someones dinner! So soon, I will put on my mac and wellies and go out looking for him. Well it makes a change! But I certainly wouldnt want to eat him...even if I could cope with first killing him and then plucking him. He is safe with me then. I wonder if he knows that! As for where he comes from that is still a mystery...but if his keeper reads this please know that I would hand him over gladly...as long as he wasnt destined to go into someones oven! Life just gets stranger day by day! But its not boring!

My mum was raised in London where I was born in 43. She moved to Hayle with my dad in 45 and we lived in a small cottage till I was 11.
My dad left in 46 so my mum found out how to raise chickens for both the eggs and also the meat

We had to survive on very little brought food
We were lucky as when she cleared the half acre of jungle of the garden she found lots of fruit trees and fruit bushes.
From the age of 4 I was involved in digging and managing 2 large allotment type veg patches.
The poultry kept us going through difficult times.
No financial support from my father who I only remember seeing twice. She initially received 10/- weekly state support and as soon as I started school she skivied to earn a bit
We continued to keep poultry when we moved into a council house in 54 and at 12 I started working at weekends and in holidays to earn more money for us.
Fresh fish which i caught also added to our food supply.

An interesting childhood.

Good morning Jean.
Hope the cockerel has found his way home!
I have two cock pheasants who are regular visitors to my garden. At least they know they won’t be shot here, even though the dog barks at them - from the comfort of her home! 😊
Hope you didn’t get too wet on your garden expedition!
