I have been back in this country just four days. Since then everyday has brought a new attempt at a scam.
The first four all had the same ingredients, solar tiles and roof felt, so
I told them all to go away....no one I don't know is ever going up into my loft again. But yesterday's scam was different.
The nice lady told me that the records were showing an unusual number of possible nuisance calls. I agreed...I had had a lot this week.
The kind voice told me there was a way of stopping this...all I had to do was put my name on a register..for which there would be a nominal charge of fifty pounds.
I stopped it right there. I was already doing that with BT for no extra charge. She said only people on my regular list would get through. I said I didn't want that...it was important that everybody could reach me if they needed to. I was a priest.
She pressed on anyway...how much easier it would be for me if the calls stopped.
By this time alarm bells were ringing loud and very clear.
"I'm not going ahead with any of that." I said..."good bye."
As I put my phone down I heard her voice speaking..." She's a priest"
Hopefully this might stop the calls but if it's not me being targeted it will be someone else.
So old ladies, living alone in a large house with or without solar tiles beware.
It's simple really. They know us old dears can't check on what's going on in our lofts...we have to take their word for it.
But if in doubt ask someone you know, maybe someone whose worked for you before or just an able bodied friend...to check if needed .
So far nothing I've heard either on the phone or in person has held true...we are being targeted yet again...and ladies....we are not going to fall for it are we?

It's difficult being in your position, having to be available for pastoral matters, makes you a soft target for the scammers. I heartily recommend registering for the Telephone Preference Service so that commercial concerns, who call you without permission are committing a criminal offence.
I know that you can't use call blocking due to your role, but I wonder if you can have phone that displays the numbers of incoming calls to allow you to reject those that are number witheld etc.
I do all of that already....if I include all those that I haven't answered we are talking a silly amount! I don't pick up most of them...
How on earth did you get into this state of affairs? I don't get any of these callers or email. I can only think that at sometime you have filled in a questionnaire with all your details at some time.
I am registered with TPS, and the only callers are those pretending to be Microsoft telling me there is a problem with my pic. Usually Asian voices.
Of course we are vulnerable elderly and living alone. Just be careful. X
Babs the clue is where I live...it's a village where almost every person is very rich. I am on a register for having solar panels...two lots...my address doesn't help!
A quick Google reveals a very large house! I am obviously an excellent target...as are other single people in this village.
One of the penalties for living in the back and beyond!
