Strictly?

My husband really liked Strictly Come Dancing which is mostly why I watched it. But I never really got very involved in it...
As the weeks passed there were always people of interest to watch as they tussled with the complicated dance moves. Last year the presence of Ed Balls ensured my continuing interest....it really was excellent viewing.
This year the first two weeks passed without my even noticing that it was on.
But finally I settled down to it.
I recorded it last night so that I could fast forward the dull bits...but I did want to see the replacement for the main judge whose name I forget .
There they all were, all the usual suspects enjoying the liberty to criticise , making bad jokes about the brave attempts at dance and generally becoming even more judgemental than before. The new Len turned out to be a woman I'd never heard of but I assume she is important in her chosen field...
I only got half way through the recording.
I didn't know who most of the celebrities were...and had no curiosity to find out.
For me this program was never an important addition to Saturday night..I watched with my husband because he loved it...the glamour, the dresses, and the people. I tried never to burst his bubble by telling him that I didn't like Bruce at all and was relieved when he was taken off...the girls do a good job but if in the end I am left cold by the dresses, the backstage gossip and the dancing then it's time to stop.
It's a couple of hours on Saturday night I can use in other ways...it no longer feels disloyal to David...he's still free to watch from his cloud...
My TV habits are not good . I still watch far too many soaps but I do enjoy the news programs and the debates...I just prefer to see my favourites without sequins and high heels! Sorry my love!

I love the Strictly format. Brings back memories of learning to do some of those dances (the original, not the ones portrayed) when we first God married. My spouse, many years ago, danced with the Peggy Spencer Troup, which appeared on the original Come Dancing, dancing formation dancing and who were both glamorous and skilled. So,it was natural for me to want to join her in dancing. I'm afraid that I suffered from 43 years of Army Drill (I eventually became a Drill Instructor) and did everything by numbers, and found the transition to dance, difficult. My spouse, spent a lot of her time during lessons, sitting on the sidelines, laughting at my clumsy attempts to gain some proficiency. Eventually, I had to give up, due to pressure of work, but had a rudimentary grasp of the correct way dances should go, which allows me to have a critical view of what they're doing on SCD.

I have to admit that dances like the American Smooth lead me cold, but I admire the perseverance of those who persist and improve, week on week.

And, even my spouse sits and comments, so we have a shared interest in the program and watch it regularly. I have to admit that those outfits often leave little to the imagination, and we as couple would prefer them to be a little less revealing - perhaps a sign of our advancing age.

But the skill and dedication of the competitors are admirable, although the stomping performance of the Rev Richard Coles deservedly earned him a swift exit.
