Early this morning I heard the voice of someone I’ve never met but who played an unwitting part in many of our family conversations.
Betty Boothroyd , now Baroness Boothroyd gave an appeal on the radio this morning. Her Lancashire tones brought back a whole host of memories.
After a general election whilst we still lived up north my husband came home from some electioneering with an invitation. It was to go to Betty Boothroyds victory party.
I went to bed.
He stayed up telling me he might have to go out again...he didn’t want to miss her party!
Finding him in bed the next morning I asked how the party had gone. He looked a little sheepish...the victory party hadn’t happened...she had lost her seat.
From that time on every time he announced any unlikely event in his life I used to tease him that it was going to be Betty Boothroyd's victory party all over again.
I’ve followed her career ever since with some interest especially when she became the Speaker and no longer had to fight elections or have victory parties.
This morning her familiar voice brought back lots of memories.....she sounded good on the radio...and it was great to hear that she was still championing good causes...
Not having an election to fight, with no political overtones, she is still soldiering on, on behalf of needy children...
I’d go to her victory party...metaphorically speaking.
But instead I’ll send some cash in memory of years gone by .
