Having had an alcoholic father I was very slow to drink alcohol as a young woman. Going into a pub felt like walking into a place of danger. I didn’t do it for many years...
During my middle years I relaxed a little with the concept of having a drink.
My husband used to call into the local on his way home. He was never drunk but he did enjoy the company of men in the bar so when he took early retirement he continued the habit of seeing his mates in the local.
Before going out he would present me with a glass containing gin , tonic, a slice of lemon and an ice cube.
I enjoyed it. And it’s a habit I’ve continued ever since.
It’s not always gin. David loved wine and would open a bottle most evenings...he taught me a lot about good wine and I still enjoy it though one bottle lasts me several evenings.
Now on my own I still have an early evening drink and another much later to go to bed with.
I have told my doctor that I go to bed with a scotch and ginger wine, otherwise known as a ginger Mac.
He laughed.
So now when I keep hearing the recommendations and indeed warnings about drinking alcohol I worry......but not for too long....
I’ve got to my old age in reasonable nick. I am never drunk. But I do enjoy my self indulgence, hopefully without doing myself any harm...
So cheers chaps...bottoms up!
