I have just about recovered from the last set of visitors so imagine my joy at an email yesterday promising another set of old friends . Apparently it’s much cooler here than it is upcountry! The reverse of the usual weather seems to be working for us now . Just as people used to come here for the hot weather now it’s our coolness which is attractive! ..I suppose the truth is that August has always been the busiest month. Whilst the schools are closed for the summer we are always full! . This time I must put my foot firmly down....I can not go off boating every day, eating out every night or walking the beaches or hills. I can’t use my age as the excuse for this...all the people due to arrive are a similar age. But this time they are on their own!
I am always pleased to see old friends...some of them go back 50years. but we are all aging now so it’s time to sit about a bit surely whilst remembering those who are no longer with us!
I am pleased by the news this morning advocating the idea that we must all cut down on the amount of meat that we eat. I spent ten years as a vegetarian and still don’t eat much meat . Being a veggie brings all sorts of unpleasant eyebrow raising and worse...but the feeling of being "different" never really bothered me but I went back to eating meet on first going out with my second husband. He took me to a steak bar! That did it! I still don’t eat much meat..but bacon sizzling in a pan is always going to get my mouth watering...
At home on my own there are plenty of meat free days but when I’m out with friends I always order meat dishes mostly because the vegetarian dishes on offer are pretty grim. If I say anything like this to my old friends I am immediately invited to do some cooking! This I turn down with a merry laugh...I’m not starting anything I would find hard to ditch...
I knew when I came to live here that this situation would exist. It is lovely to see old friends regularly. , I’m just not starting to cook for them.

I hope that all goes well with the visitors. I'm glad that we only occasionally have visitors, we tend to visit others, possibly because we are quite private people at home.
Cornwall is a beautiful county and I recall many trips on foot across Exmoor and other parts when I was based in Plymouth in the dim, distant past. And also exercising at places like Tregantle on the firing ranges and the old Fort, now turned into a visitor attraction I understand.
