Safely at sea?

Catching my interest this morning was the news of the cruise ships firmly anchored to try to avoid any further cases of the Coronavirus bug. There are worse places to sit out the threat but having spent a week in my cabin on one of my cruises I do know the frustrations involved. Cruise ships are luxurious and if you have a cabin with a balcony it’s not as bad as it sounds. But it depends how long you are there. My husband was able to come and go whilst I was not which made for some very odd conversations. Staying put isn’t too bad given that all my meals and drinks were brought to my door when the steward would come in politely and I would take delivery of food and drink to consume alone. The mind boggles over how keeping everyone in their staterooms for any period of time would place huge problems for the ships crew! I stayed put for about a week. But how long hundreds of people could be persuaded not to leave their cabins remains to be seen. My guess is not long. But if the ship is at anchor the passengers could get off anyway without lowering the tenders and that exercise in the hands of passengers rather than crew could lead to total chaos! I am very glad to be safely at home right now. The expected illness does not seem a threat here in deepest Cornwall. But I can still pray for those in trouble on the other side of the world.

The quarantine of the passengers is necessarily being enforced to prevent others contracting a disease, which is proving deadly for those who encounter it. It must be frustration being detained in that way, but a necessary evil in my view.

I wonder how much it is costing the cruise lines, perhaps their insurance will cover it, and they won't ask passengers to cough up for the extra days on board.
