At last there is an item in the news to cheer me up! A silly detail but very important to my first husband David. He spent his whole life working for Nat West being a bank manager in a northern branch before being moved to the head Office in the city. He would have been horrified by Nat West being taken over by the Royal Bank of Scotland. And at the time I was daftly glad that he hadn’t lived to see it. So this morning the news woke me up enough to actually cheer from my bed. It’s only a change of name but I am so glad that the bank is going back to its original name...my bank account is once again with Nat West! Silly thing I know but of sentimental joy to me. Nat West was a good firm to work for. Every time David got a promotion we often had a house move and Nat West made it much easier than it might have been, paying for new carpets if needed, and any of the other expenses involved in a house move. So this morning, from my bed I cheered...loudly...my bank is going back to being what it always was during my younger years. I know it’s daft but David would be delighted up there on his cloud...and so am I down here in daft isolation. It was time to get some good news and although this just a change of name it has cheered me enormously. Thank you !

I know someone else who will be cheering this morning. Our 94 year old former organist, Dougie was a life long Bank Manager for National Westminster Bank from his demob in 1945 to his retirement in the late sixties.
He adored his work and as well as his Navy Service stories, he recounts many stories of his work in a number of different branches, in both Central London and the South East London. His favourite story was holding in his branch safe for safe custody much of the silver ware of the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich and the RN College at Greenwich, before they set up the Maritime Museum and the Royal Artillery Museum at the Rotunda at Woolwhich. He was never aware of the respective values, but many millions of pounds was his estimate.
He was immensely proud of his Navel Service and of his work with the Bank and his pension has allowed him to be comfortable in his dotage.
