Recollections of a Pro

Here we are finally in the West Indies. We have just docked in Bridgetown, Barbados. This is bringing back so many memories of my childhood I am flooded with them. I have never been here before. But when I was a child my father had a friend who was a West Indian cricketer.
Ellis Achong was the Lancashire Pro and he was both very black and very kind. He helped me with my homework especially Maths and he talked. The descriptions of his beloved country were graphic and poetic. He fostered in me a desire to visit this eldorado that he spoke of so eloquently. He had three children and they were my friends at a time when there were no other black people in Rochdale.
When they went home he became a politician and the president of his country. I havnt thought about him for years until this morning. And I can hear him singing. "With those old friends of mine. Ramadin and Valentine"
Who knows what today will bring? Going ashore soon. Praise the Lord.
