In with all the cards arriving daily are small details that I could easily miss. The one yesterday told me of the death of a very old much loved man.
I suppose it's inevitable now at my age that some of my friends are going aloft and I'm glad that someone gave me the facts. It means I don't have to worry about why I'm not getting a card back.
Having not had a card from my old college friend Edith for two years I suspect the same cause holds good.
The man yesterday has been a friend for about fifty years. We acted in the same dramatic society and he looked after his mother rather than get married. His wit and self deprecating manner cheered me up more times than I can ever remember.
His story about being taken ill after his mother had died made me rock with laughter. He had risen from his bed ,made it, putting on clean sheets and then he had dressed himself in newly laundered and ironed pyjama before climbing back into it.
"Well I didn't want him to think I was dirty" he said with a shudder.
"No....just dead of exhaustion " I said crossly...
He just laughed...
I have thought about him on and off since hearing about his last fight with cancer which he lost.
Thank goodness someone told me....I would have worried otherwise.
Rest in Peace old friend...I'm not that far behind you....
