Now I seem to have retired, Saturday is a whole new day!
In the past this day was used for finishing sermons, and exhorting my printer to produce it. Hymns were chosen, readings allotted, jobs handed out etc....
Now I have a whole day stretching out before me with nothing demanding attention.
I’m not sure whether this is good or bad...I’m sure it will turn out to be a good thing eventually but right now it feels odd....almost alien.
There are lots of advantages in being a retired priest.....not getting up in time to preside over the eight o’clock communion ranks high on that list!
The hardest thing is to realise that I’m no longer needed.....
This was always going to happen eventually but it’s taking some adjustment right now.
The sun shines, my garden is full of colour and great beauty, I have lots of things that need doing....I’m just not used to being able to do them on a Saturday.
I am now free to visit old friends. Going to favourite beaches, having a swim, walking the cliffs, all activities I have always enjoyed are now possible but never were on Saturday.
Before I became a priest this was a day when I was free to go shopping...but in this heat that doesn’t appeal...
I’ll get used to it....I might even enjoy it eventually but right now the habit of working is still getting in the way!
Keeping cool ...
I can do this!
