This prolonged period of heat is wonderful here in Cornwall but it has reminded me of other times and other places.
The first David and I didn’t do abroad. We always had a dog and putting him into kennels was simply not considered so we always took him with us and stayed in hotels in various parts of this country before we settled on Cornwall as our personal paradise.
One June holiday was taken in this sort of heat in a lovely hotel in the Peak District.
It had its own swimming pool fed by a thermal source of warm fresh water.
During the heat wave we spent a lot of time in the pool but I will never forget the journey home.
In eighty degree heat the main thing was to keep the temperatures in the car bearable.
We stopped frequently , the poor golden retriever gasping for breath and near to collapse in the heat.
A journey of about four hours in normal weather took us most of the day.
When we arrived home we collapsed in a heap, seeking for some cool space...
There was non...the next morning we went out to buy fans as well as bottles of spring water to keep in the fridge.
Essex was hot. When my husband went back to work in his office in London he sent out for fans to try to keep everyone if not cool then more comfortable.
After that summer periods of heat became commonplace.
On moving here I brought my fans with me. They were never used though one of them still gathers dust in my barn.
Extreme heat is unusual here. Living high on a cliff close to the sea means there are always cool spots.
But it’s hot enough now to bring back some very interesting memories....
