Going guarantor!

Over the weekend I flicked through various channels on the TV in an idle moment. My attention was caught by the words..."Going guarantor "
The person had pledged to support a relation who was buying something they couldn’t really afford.
The words brought back horrid memories for me.
I had been asked by a close relation to guarantee her rent for a new flat she wanted to move into.
A few months later I got a phone call and several letters asking me for money.
She hadn’t paid her rent for three months.
I paid it.
The next month I got another demand.
Although my granddaughter had promised to pay she hadn’t. She told me she’d been unable to work. She’d been ill.
Sympathetic I again paid her rent, even though David warned me that I had to make her take responsibility for herself. She was in her early twenties.
This went on for another couple of months.
I spoke to the letting agent for her flat explaining that she’d been ill.
He laughed. "She’s playing you." He said, she’s having the time of her life, not working, playing the poverty card.."
Communications between me and my grand daughter got very frosty and altogether I paid several thousand pounds to allow her to keep her flat...until
I spoke to my solicitor who managed to break my commitment.
I regret that we do not now communicate.
It was a hard lesson learned...I will never again go guarantee for anyone..
The program reopened old wounds...but I thought I could trust my grand daughter. I was wrong. So be it.
