BST?

It’s dark outside this morning....and this is the weekend when we say goodbye to British Summertime.  At least I think it is...

Trying to explain this to another human being was quite difficult this week. My friend professed no knowledge that we mess around with our time. As she is a grown woman it was hard to believe that the joys of British Summertime had somehow passed her by. But they had.

I think that I have heard that we are due to abandon this strange system this year..but I’m not sure about that either.

I do remember that on several occasions when getting up at seven o’clock to do the eight o’clock communion on Sunday morning it felt very early indeed as I was in effect getting up at six o’clock...

To find a reasonable explanation to explain this to another human being proved difficult yesterday......she behaved as if the whole concept had completely passed her by. And so it might I suppose...depending on how compus mentis you were at bed time...

I remember several occasions when I was teaching,  trying to explain this concept to a class of forty children and being met with frank disbelief .

So have we come to the end? Or have I just made it up ?  I do remember the year of double summer time when getting up in the dark became almost normal. I’m sure I can just look it all up somewhere...but what a shame to deny myself the joy of just waiting to see...

This seems the pattern of life I seem to be following just now...  let’s just wait and see shall we? And if any of you feel inclined to post long explanations please be aware that I might not read them...

The history of it goes back to WW1 when the government imposed it to allow longer hours for workers on the land and in munitions factories. It continued after the war to this day.

And Europe also changes their clocks, meaning that they are always one hour ahead of us, whatever time we are on.

I understand that the idea of binning the clock changes has been put on hold until after brexit, when the hope is to align our times better with other time zones, when we have free trade agreements.

Frankly, the experiment where they decided to maintain summer time all year round was unpopular with fears of children walking to school or home in the dark. And was abandoned very soon.

We are used to changing time, and is seems a little short sighted to change what is there. Many systems are engineered to change automatically, including my watch, computers etc. Changing that would be costly in my view, and not worth the trouble.
